Attracting Freeloader And Other Wild Birds Using A Large Bird Feeder
There are various ways to bring birds along with other small animals in close for you to look after. This can be a great learning experience for you and your children. A good way to do this is to set up a large bird feeder somewhere in your yard. Placing one close to a deck or patio is an excellent location, but other place in the yard will be enough as long as you take some precautions.
When you bring in birds by setting up a large bird feeder, you are eventually going to also draw other animals. Squirrels are possible freeloader who find a feeder simply like a free buffet. Once a single squirrel finds it he will certainly tell all of his friends. This is good if you don't mind sharing the food with them as long as you are aware that one squirrel can empty a feeder very quickly.
If your aim is to simply attract wild birds then the right precautions must be taken. Not placing your large bird feeder near trees will make it difficult for the squirrels to access it. Make sure it is squirrel jumping distance away from the trees or whatever they might use to jump to the feeder. When you use a bird feeder pole or a garden hook as a holder you must coat the poles with something to deter climbing.
A homeowner can smear grease or other substance that is slick but in the long run rain will wash some of it off. Plus, it is unpleasant to see a slicked up pole using this method. A better alternative might be planting a thorn bush all-around the bottom and allowing the runners take over the pole but that provides you with its own dangers such as what it will do to you when trying to access the large bird feeder.
You may also place a disc around the pole about halfway up the length to make sure squirrels are unable to maneuver around. Just make sure it is far enough off the soil that a squirrel can't jump onto the top of it and therefore make its way to the bird feeder for a free meal.
Setting a large bird feeder around a deck or patio will also discourage animals from attempting to take the food meant for birds. It will also bring birds close enough so their color and activity can be enjoyed more. Nevertheless, if your activities on the deck are often noisy ones or with many movement, the wild birds will not venture near. Quiet activities like sitting out with your laptop or quietly sitting just enjoying the scene will not drive off the birds.
