Is The Raw Vegan Diet A Good Idea For The Long Term?

I want to share my view on a raw food diet. I comprehend the concept that heating foods may eradicate essential nutrients and enzymes and our body need to take from the limited store of enzymes to assist in assimilation of the food. I can also say that when eating a raw diet for any period of time, I feel wonderful!

OK then, what's with all the chatter about needing meat in the diet? Certain well respected former raw foodies and some other health speakers are proposing that a raw vegan diet may not be appropriate as a lifelong diet. All of the views differ slightly but some of them feel that meat in our diet is vital for DHA, which is an essential fatty acid, allegedly not found in a plant eating plan. According to what I've read, DHA is what feeds our brains and I believe it also plays a role in eye health.

Resulting from my research of this "concern" I found that essential fats are abundant in some plants, seeds and nuts, just not the all-important DHA. But, upon further study on the topic I found that we have a product available that contains DHA from an algae, and algae qualifies as vegan.

I also discovered that, having enough EFA's in the diet from plant foods (avocados, flax and walnuts for example.), our body is able to produce usable DHA from them. Mind you, it could be more "effort" than you want to put your body through, and it may require some additional nutrients that could be beneficial in other areas of the body. But, with the mass amounts of extra digestible nutrients you get from raw foods, that may not be of concern. However, as mentioned previously, a vegan product with DHA is now readily available.

I don't intend to discuss the misnomer that protein is not found in plant food because I assume at this point that notion has been debunked, but another highly discussed concern about the raw foods diet is the availability of the very important vitamin B12, which is said to only be available from animal products. A number of raw foodists will suggest the very same thing and then try to promote a plant-based B12 supplement that "they utilize themselves". However, a quick study of the Chlorella Factor (chlorellafactor.com) will probably change your beliefs on that. Again, algaes contributing to health.

In closing I would like to offer my thoughts on the raw vegan diet for longevity. To keep it real I do not really know. But, I feel that there is no doubt that a 100% natural raw vegan diet is a very very good tool to remove toxins and also heal from ill health and maybe even disease.

Since I am uncertain about being on a raw diet for the long term, I personally adhere to a mostly raw, mostly plant derived diet unless I am on a cleanse. I consume a great deal of green smoothies and juices but I also add some eggs, bee by-products such as honey and bee pollen and once in awhile some small fish.
